The brant or brent goose is a small goose of the genus Branta. There are three subspecies, all of which winter along temperate-zone sea-coasts and breed on the high-Arctic tundra.

§ Identification
Field marks. Small black-headed and black-necked goose with a small white necklace patch, dark chest, and a white rear. No white cheek patch (unlike Canada Goose).
Similar species. Canada and Cackling geese have a white cheek patch and brown body; Brant is smaller, darker, and strictly coastal.
Voice. A soft, rolling, guttural 'cr-r-ronk' given by flocks.

Diet. Aquatic plants, grasses, grain.
Behavior. A small, dark sea goose that grazes on eelgrass and sea lettuce in shallow coastal bays; migrates in long undulating lines low over the water rather than in high V's.
