The Saint Francis's satyr is a butterfly subspecies found only in the US state of North Carolina. First discovered in 1983, it was first described by David K. Parshall and Thomas W. Kral in 1989 and listed as federally endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 1994. It is a subspecies of N. mitchellii and is restricted to a single metapopulation on Fort Bragg military base in Hoke and Cumberland counties. The other subspecies, Mitchell's satyr, is also federally endangered.

Similar species. Other Neonympha species (similar but range-different; expert ID). Pearly-eyes (much larger; different range).

Diet. Caterpillars: sedges (Carex mitchelliana) at boggy beaver-engineered seeps. Adults: nectar.
Behavior. One of the most range-restricted butterflies in the world — found only in a few wet meadows on Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina. Federal endangered. Dependent on beaver-engineered wetlands; populations crashed when beavers were eradicated, recovered when beavers were reintroduced. Captive rearing at North Carolina Zoo and reintroduction to managed habitats are central to recovery strategy.
